Dog training has become over-complicated through the years. It seems that every time I walk into the local pet store, I see some new "training aid" that is going to revolutionize the way your dog acts. Simply put this ridiculous looking collar on your dog, and they will walk like a show dog. Seriously? Do you want your dog to look like Hannibal every time you walk him/her in public?
Don't bribe your dog with treats, wrap them in some crazy device or have to use a clicker when you want your dog to do something. What if there is an emergency situation and you need your dog to obey you NOW, with all sorts of distractions occurring around him/her?
I have been training military, police, private protection and competition dogs for nearly two decades. I want to teach you the real way to train your companion dog to comply with your commands. I want to help you create the most attentive and obedient dog you have met, making him/her a lifetime pet that will never be dumped at a shelter or pound. I would like for your family and friends to be amazed when they meet your dog, thinking that you must have cloned Lassie.
Is this possible? Can I make my dog listen to what I say, each and every time I want them to do something for me? If your dog can make eye contact with you and is social, the answer is yes. Don't buy into the hype about "old dogs learning new tricks". One of the best dogs I ever had I got when she was 11 years old...she had spent her life making puppies so that her owner didn't have to take on a second job. What I ended up with was a beautiful senior dog that attained her AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC), Utility Dog (UD), Companion Dog Excellent (CDX) and Schutzhund I. If you don't know what all of these titles mean, know that she was obedient, fast and sure of herself.
To those of you that are in the market for a dog, I will help you select a puppy. I would suggest going to your local animal shelter, humane society or pound as some of the best dogs I have seen are free or on "death row".
